Benefits of 'buddy Gambling'

By Jacky Dipston

We all know what an amazing night on the town can do to your reputation. Casinos, in particular, with their flowing alcohol, high-stakes atmosphere, and late-into-the-night gambling sessions can be spaces where you can easily lose yourself. Stories abound of well-intentioned patrons who started an evening with lofty ambitions of fun and sensible limits, and who left with credit card debts large enough to sink them...permanently. Perhaps it's the sense of carefree-ness that gambling house like to engender in their customers that makes losing your proverbial head such an attractive proposition. Everywhere you look, every object of the human gaze, will be some sort of encouragement to spend. Don't have the cash? Draw it, the casino says. Don't have enough in your account to justify another few rounds on the roulette wheel? Charge it. It's no accident that auto-teller machines are located virtually everywhere in and around the betting areas. It's one big spending orgy, and if you get caught off guard you can live to regret it for a long while.

Remember, as much as casinos are spaces of adventure and potential easy wins, they are also spaces of excess and financial ruin. You have personal agency here, it's your choice what you bet, how much you bet, and where you place that money. But once you're in the round, once the chips are on the table, once the slot machine is spinning, you are reliant on the wheel of fortune, even "outrageous fortune" as Shakespeare so aptly conceived it.

How do you protect yourself against an unintended loss while still having a genuinely great evening? One particularly effective way is to never go gambling alone. Always take at least one good friend with you. And when we say "good friend" we mean someone who has no issue pulling you aside and telling you in no uncertain terms to pull yourself together, finish your drink and leave immediately when the stakes start getting higher than you're actually comfortable with. A good friend will never allow you to buy casino chips on credit. A good friend will make sure you stop at drink number four when your pupils start to dilate and you're getting overconfident in a round of poker.

Good friends can also be instrumental in saving your life! Are you really sober enough to drive home after that cocktail-induced haze you put yourself in while going large on a round of Baccarat? A good friend will immediately book you a room at the casino hotel or personally take you home before he or she will put you behind the wheel.

Take a buddy with you the next time you go gambling. It's more fun, it's a safer, and it'll really be a great night out, sans regrets.
