Andre Villas-Boas is preparing to kick off the upcoming 2011/2012 Premier League campaign against Stoke in a welcoming atmosphere that would appear to be entirely conducive to moving full steam towards another league title, with Chelsea stars Florent Malouda and Ashley Cole both putting their faith in the new manager by confirming they have no desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
So far this summer, rumours have been far reaching that Malouda will be the subject of bids from both AC Milan and AS Roma, while Spanish club Real Madrid, who are of course now managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, were apparently doing their best to line up a reunion between the Special One and Cole.
Cole and Malouda both deciding to stay is certainly music to the ears of Chelsea fans, who can see for themselves the level of confidence the young Portuguese manager has instilled in his squad since arriving at Stamford Bridge. Even though he is by some distance the youngest manager in the top flight of English football at the age of 33, Villas-Boas is certainly not lacking in experience and motivation. Both goalkeeper Petr Cech and Ashley Cole haven't been afraid to speak out against the manager's critics, with some pundits still believing he does not have the experience needed to compete at the highest level.
"You don't measure people by age, but by quality," says Cech, "If you are 18 and capable of being a manager of a big club, the age will not stop you doing so." Cole echoed his sentiments, saying "Age is just a number; he has experience of being at Porto, a big club."
The record breaking season secured by Villas-Boas at Porto proves what the man is able to achieve with a talented bunch of players at his disposal, with the manager guiding the Portuguese club to a treble while also becoming the youngest manager ever to win a competition in Europe. The experience he gained at Chelsea while under Mourinho has also been regarded as a key reason for his success.
Having said all of that, the young manager's longevity has not yet bee truly tested, with his longest spell in charge coming at Porto, and even that was only for just over a calendar year. As far as Chelsea are concerned, time will tell whether Roman Abramovich will allow their new manager the luxury of time.
