The Champions Of The Match

By Mark Devereux

The Barclays Premier League, as its name suggests, is the premier football league in England. Their main sponsor, Barclays Bank, was the origin of Barclays Premier League name. From the original football league division 1, the league was established in 1992. The clubs decided to form their own league to capitalize the increasing television revenue from satellite television. The continues increase of television income has made Barclays Premier League the top league in terms of commercial revenue. Television has also played its part in increasing the exposure of the Barclays Premier League from being UK, and to a lesser degree, Europe focused in the days of the football league, to becoming the worldwide brand that the Barclays Premier League is today.

Each season three teams are promoted to the championship and the bottom three gets relegated in the League. Since it's foundation in 1992, Manchester United have dominated the league winning the title 12 times. The current champion at the time of writing (2010/2011) is the Manchester United. The first, second and third team in the League automatically qualifies for the group stages of UEFA Champions League. The teams that finish fourth and fifth enter the qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

As a result of being the highest profile league in the world, The Barclays Premier League receives the most attention from bookmakers. Huge range of betting markets, especially of it is a televised game, are available for League. The way to win in the League is not by betting on any of the highest profile, top four teams. There is often no value in win markets for these games. Manchester United needed odds of 1 to win at home. A 25 to 1 stakes give a return of just 25 pence from a 1.

It pays to think a little more creatively. Of course, when Manchester United play at home, we expect them to win. Footydata is one strategy use to search for stats that are common for strong, dominant teams, this is true not just in the Barclays Premier League but in other leagues too. An example is a strong team will usually win the most corners, score the most goals, keep the most clean sheets, etc. Backing the strongest team to win indirectly and getting better odds on the market is possible.

If you are looking to bet on the League using number crunch to some of the lesser known betting statistics and markets, use footydata. The possibility that you will achieve better odds and better returns than betting on the more obvious, high profile markets in the League involving the big famous teams. Remember the bookmaker makes most of his money on the straight win bets involving the big teams, it stands to reason that these are the bets that they want you to make.
