Ways To Enhance Your Commute: Using a Commuter Bike

By Kyle Piraino

Before I heard of a commuter bike, I could not even remember the last time I had ridden a bicycle. Not many times do you even have a situation where riding a bike makes sense. Well I found the situation where riding a bike is not only a good decision, but a great one. There are too many positives to not consider getting a travel bike.

You always hear about people complaining that they do not have time to exercise. It's always too early to get up and too late to do it when you get home from work tired from a long day. Well then what better way to take advantage of time you would normally spend sitting on a subway? Getting your exercise on your commute with a commuter bike saves you time and makes it productive.

A new bike costs a pretty penny I will admit. But that money is almost immediately made up for with not only the money you save on your commute, but the money you would save on a gym membership as well. You only have to give money to the bike once, and the lack of monthly MTA cards and the gym membership will easily save you enough money for it to be worth it.

The one negative that I thought I would run into would be getting to work sweaty and gross after riding a bike to work, but that wasn't the case. Living in the city means that there are no hills, so riding your commuter bike is care free and effortless. Pedaling on a flat surface on a easy gear gets you to work while avoiding the traffic and without the sweat.

There are just too many positives to not get a bike at this point. More money in your pocket, exercise, and less stress in the morning commute. Dealing with the subways alone is a great reason to get a bike. The stress and annoyance of the amount of people that get packed into a New York City subway is reason enough for me to commute bicycle.
